Lion’s Mane for Mental Energy & Brain Health: What Does the Science Really Tell Us?

Could a mushroom help your brain work better and help you feel more mentally energized? Lion’s Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) has become one of the most talked-about functional mushrooms for memory, focus and healthy aging. But behind the impressive marketing claims is a more interesting scientific question. In this article, I explore the unique properties of Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) and what scientific research tells us about its potential benefits for cognitive function, neuroplasticity, and brain health.

1.What is Lion’s Mane?

Lion’s Mane is an edible and medicinal mushroom known scientifically as Hericium erinaceus. It has traditionally been used in East Asian medicine and is now being investigated for its potential neurological, antioxidant, immune and gut-related effects.

What makes Lion’s Mane particularly interesting is that different parts of the mushroom contain different bioactive compounds.

Fruiting body

The visible mushroom, the part we traditionally think of as the mushroom, contains compounds including:

  • β-glucans

  • polysaccharides

  • hericenones

  • other antioxidant and bioactive compounds

These compounds are being investigated for their potential effects on immune function, oxidative stress, inflammation and neurological health.

Mycelium

The mycelium is the network of fungal filaments from which the mushroom develops. It contains a different group of compounds called erinacines, including erinacine A.

2.Lion’s Mane and the brain: why is everyone interested?

One reason Lion’s Mane has attracted so much scientific attention is its potential effect on neurotrophic pathways.

Neurotrophic factors are proteins that help neurons survive, grow and maintain their connections.

Two particularly important ones are:

NGF — Nerve Growth Factor

NGF is involved in the growth, maintenance and survival of certain neurons and is important for learning and memory.

Preclinical research suggests that compounds from Hericium erinaceus, particularly erinacines, can influence pathways involved in NGF signaling.

BDNF — Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor

BDNF is sometimes described as a “fertilizer for the brain.”

It plays an important role in:

  • learning

  • memory

  • neuronal plasticity

  • adaptation

  • formation and maintenance of neural connections

Importantly, the human evidence is beginning to support this biological hypothesis.

3. What do recent studies say us?

Three human clinical trials provide promising but still preliminary evidence that Lion’s Mane may support cognitive health.

  • 🍄 Fruiting body: 12 weeks of supplementation showed a significant improvement in overall Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores, but other cognitive tests were not significantly improved.

  • 🧠 Erinacine-A mycelium in people with mild Alzheimer’s disease: 49 weeks of supplementation showed improvements in MMSE and daily functioning, although the study was small and several other outcomes were not significant.

  • 🔬 Erinacine-A mycelium in healthy older adults: 8 weeks was associated with improved processing speed, increased BDNF, and greater gut microbiome diversity.

How should we understand these results?

The studies suggest that Lion’s Mane may support certain aspects of brain function and neuroplasticity, with particularly interesting results from erinacine-A-enriched mycelium. However, the studies were small, used different preparations and doses, and were relatively short.

What I can say is that early human studies suggest that certain Lion’s Mane preparations may support aspects of cognitive function and neuroplasticity, particularly when the preparation is standardized for erinacine A. However, product quality, dose, and duration matter enormously.

4. Which Lion’s Mane product would I choose?

If cognitive support is the primary goal, my selection criteria would be:

1. Standardized erinacine A
2. Pure or clearly characterized mycelium
3. Transparent cultivation method
4. Third-party analytical testing
5. Canadian regulatory status where applicable

Based on these criteria, these are 3 products I find particularly interesting for clients interested in brain health.

*These products have not been proven in clinical trials to prevent or treat dementia. My recommendations are based on the quality and standardization of the products and how closely their active-compound profiles correspond to the preparations investigated in human research.

5. Lion’s Mane is not a substitute for an energy strategy and brain health.

This is where I believe the biggest mistake in the supplement industry happens. If you're tired, experiencing brain fog or struggling with concentration, the answer isn't necessarily another supplement.

Energy is a system.

Brain health depends on many interconnected factors, including:

🥗 Nutrition

Your brain needs adequate:

  • protein

  • omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA

  • B vitamins

  • iron

  • magnesium

  • zinc

  • antioxidants

  • fiber and polyphenols

🩸 Metabolic health

Blood glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular health all matter for long-term brain health.

🦠 Gut health

The gut and brain communicate through multiple pathways, including neural, immune and metabolic signaling.

Interestingly, the 2024 Lion’s Mane study found increased gut microbiome diversity alongside cognitive and BDNF-related findings. But this does not prove that the microbiome changes caused the cognitive effects.

🏃 Movement

Regular aerobic exercise is one of the most established lifestyle strategies for supporting brain health and BDNF signaling.

Walking, swimming, cycling, dancing or playing pickleball can all be part of a brain-health routine.

😴 Sleep

You cannot compensate for chronic sleep deprivation with supplements. Sleep is essential for memory consolidation, brain recovery and healthy cognitive function.

6. A note about safety

Lion’s Mane appears to have been generally well tolerated in the small clinical trials available, but side effects can occur. Reported adverse effects include gastrointestinal discomfort and, in some reports, skin reactions.

If you have a mushroom allergy, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, have been diagnosed with cognitive impairment or dementia, or take prescription medications, discuss supplementation with your physician, pharmacist or other qualified healthcare professional.

Natural does not automatically mean risk-free.
